The Turing test, proposed by mathematician Alan Turing in 1950, was one of the earliest serious attempts to define what it would mean for a machine to 'think'. The test itself is simple in concept, even though its implications are debated to this day.
How the Test Works
A human judge holds a text conversation with two unseen participants, one human and one machine, without knowing which is which. If the judge cannot reliably tell which participant is the machine based on the conversation alone, the machine is said to have passed the test.
Why the Test Is Debated
Critics have long pointed out that fooling a human judge in conversation is not necessarily the same thing as genuine understanding or intelligence. A system could, in principle, learn to imitate convincing conversation patterns without possessing anything resembling actual reasoning or awareness, which is exactly the criticism raised by the well-known 'Chinese Room' thought experiment.
Where Things Stand Today
Modern AI chat assistants can already hold conversations convincing enough that many people would struggle to distinguish them from a human in a short exchange, yet most AI researchers no longer treat passing the Turing test as proof of genuine intelligence or understanding. Instead, today's research community tends to favour more specific, measurable benchmarks for evaluating different aspects of an AI system's capabilities.
